Communion at Home
A sacred remembrance — Christ gave this command to all of us.
I’m a firm believer that believers should take communion regularly in their homes. Christ gave this command to all of us — not just to pastors, but to every believer. You need a willing heart, a few simple elements, and the Holy Spirit to lead you.
What follows is a step-by-step guide to walk you through the process. Take your time. This isn’t a ritual to rush through. It’s a sacred remembrance of what Jesus did for us.
Keep Communion Items in Your Home
Keep communion elements on hand so you’re always ready. Add them to your monthly grocery list so you never run out.
What You’ll Need
- The Bread: The bread Jesus used was made in haste, without leaven. Crackers and flatbreads are the most appropriate choices. Matzah is ideal.
- The Wine: The wine Jesus used was pressed grapes that likely did not have time to ferment. Grape wine or grape juice — either is appropriate.
Gather the Believers in Your Household
Gather anyone in your household who is a believer. This is a sacred event — don’t allow an unbeliever to take communion with you. The bread and the cup are for those who belong to Christ.
Read the Scriptures
Read any or all of the passages below. Let the Word set your heart before you begin.
Matthew 26:26-29
Mark 14:22-25
Luke 22:17-20
John 6:53-58
Read the Warning
Paul gives us a sober warning about the sacred nature of the bread and the cup. Read it aloud. Let it settle.
This is not a warning to keep you away — it’s a warning to prepare your heart. God doesn’t want your fear. He wants your reverence. Come honestly. Come humble. He meets you there.
Repent and Prepare Your Heart
Lead your family in a prayer of repentance. Keep it simple. Confess anything the Holy Spirit brings to mind. Then allow a moment of silence for each person to get their heart right before the Lord.
This is between you and Him. No one is watching. No one is judging. Just you and Jesus.
The Bread
Lift the bread. Speak a blessing over it in Jesus’ name. Thank God for the body of Christ, broken for you.
Break the bread. Eat it together.
The Cup
Lift the wine. Speak a blessing over it in Jesus’ name. Thank God for the blood of Christ, shed for the forgiveness of sins.
Pour and drink together.
Thank and Praise Him
Close with thanksgiving and praise. Thank God for His mercies. Praise Him for His faithfulness. You’ve just remembered the most sacred moment in history — the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Stay in His presence a little longer if you can.
“For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.”
— 1 Corinthians 11:26
